January-February, 2008
Message from Clay
This year promises to be exciting and challenging. Not only has my biography, "The View from Down Here is Just Fine," been published, but I will again fish the FLW Tour and FLW Series East trail as well as continuing to travel around the country speaking to various groups. While this promises to be a very busy year, I will continue to strive to live a life worthy of the opportunities that have been given to me and to make those who have supported me proud of what I accomplish. Remember, if I can; you can
November and December Recap
The C.A.S.T. for Kids event at Cape Harbor, Florida, was November’s highlight. Children with disabilities from the Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida spent the day fishing in the Gulf of Mexico with local boat captains and professional anglers. As National Spokesperson for C.A.S.T. for Kids, Clay was present and fished with the kids. On November 11th and 12th, Clay spoke at the Hernando Baptist Church in Hernando, Mississippi, and on December 16th Clay spoke at the First Baptist Church in Saucier. After relaxing at home with family and friends through the holidays, Clay was ready to start the new year.
Outlook for January and February
Clay’s first speaking engagement for 2008 will be at the East Ascension High School in Gonzales, Louisiana. Following the FLW Series tournament on Lake Okeechobee in Florida, Clay will immediately travel to Bismarck, North Dakota for two speaking engagements there including one at New Song Church. Clay was also interviewed for a story to appear in the Anniston Star Newspaper in preparation for a speech at a wild beast feast at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Anniston, Alabama on February 7th. Clay will be in Glendale, Arizona, the site of Super Bowl XLII, from January 31 through February 2, assisting the C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation in promoting fishing and other outdoor recreation at the Outdoor Recreation Village in Westgate City Center. Clay will also be available to autograph copies of his new biography, The View from Down Here is Just Fine, which was written by BassFan’s Scot Laney. Clay is an avid football fan, so he will also make time to watch the Super Bowl. After returning home, Clay’s next engagement will be a wild game dinner for the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Florence, South Carolina on February 9th. Stopping only long enough to catch his breath, Clay will make a brief appearance on Friday February 22nd at the Bassmaster Classic before participating in the FLW Tour tournament on Lake Toho in Kissimmee, Florida.

Questions and Answers with Clay
Q. What rods and reels do you prefer?
A. There are many great high quality rods and reels on the market now. I have always tried to keep what I felt gave me the best chance to come out on top of the competition, and I use Fenwick rods and Abu Garcia Revo and Ext series reels exclusively.
Q. What fishing line do you prefer for throwing crank baits?
A. I use Berkley Trilene exclusively. I use the Berkley Trilene 100% Professional Grade Fluorocarbon and Maxx Monofilament in 10-20 lb. tests.
Q. Do you typically use a rattle when fishing jigs or plastics?
A. I believe when you can appeal to all five senses of a fish at the same time, your
Chances of getting a bit rise immensely. Therefore, I do use different types of rattles depending on whether I am using a jig and crawfish trailer or a plastic.

Clay’s Inspiration for January and February
It is truly amazing how simple things can inspire you beyond explanation. This was the case this month as I spent time with a gentleman with Downs Syndrome. We fished together at the C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation event in Glendale, Arizona. We were fishing for trout and I noticed how happy and content this fellow was simply watching the trout swim around. I could not help but think to myself, I am a full time professional angler on the top pro tour in the world. As frustrating as it can be when I am trying to figure out how to catch those monster bass, I have to stop and think about a special person such as this young man who is so happy and thrilled just to watch a fish just swim around whether he catches it or not! It truly makes me realize how blessed and fortunate I am to be able to do what I do for a career. I know just how fast our lives can change, and it truly makes me be that more thankful and determined not take things for granted.
