Message from Clay

This will be a very busy month for me. I am going to make it a point to remember why I am doing what I am doing and to allow others to help me further my mission. I am also going to make an extra effort to make sure that I take care of my health in all areas of my life. Remember, if I can you can

April’s Recap
Following Easter, Clay traveled to Texas to attend the PAA fishing event at Lake Fork. At the PAA event, Clay teamed with Gary Klein, Chad Brauer, and Sandy Melvin to finish sixth out of forty teams. Clay claimed his first tour level check in this event. Following the PAA event, Clay spoke to Greenwood Baptist Church in Florence, South Carolina at the Men’s Annual Sportsman’s Banquet and at the Sunday morning service. Clay spent the remainder of the month preparing for and competing in the FLW Tour event at Lake Norman in Charlotte, North Carolina.

May’s Outlook
Clay starts the month of May off with a speaking engagement at a Youth Rally at the New Salem Baptist Church in Columbus, Mississippi. Two days later, he will speak at a Men’s Retreat at Lake Kentucky in Paducah. Clay will spend the next three weeks fishing in the FLW Series tournament on Lake Dardanelle in Russellville, Arkansas, followed by the FLW Tour event at Beaver Lake, in Rogers, Arkansas. Following these tournaments, Clay will return home for the wedding of a close friend and then leave almost immediately for a C.A.S.T. for Kids event in Spokane, Washington.

Questions and Answers with Clay

Q. Is it difficult to drive your boat in rough and windy conditions?

A. Great question! Actually, it is not that bad. People sometimes made it out to be more difficult than it is. As long as you do not go too fast, pay attention and "judge" the waves, you can ease around and be just fine. I am very fortunate that I drive a Ranger 520 VX Tour Edition Comanche with a T & H Marine Hydraulic Jack Plate that enables me to raise and lower my Evinrude Engine vertically to maneuver my boat with tremendous ease.

Q. Do you eat much while fishing?

A. I generally try not to eat unless I start to get weak, but it is important that I stay as mentally and physically strong as possible. I carry spring water and Gatorade to drink. I try to get as much protein as possible in my system to stay strong and alert and, therefore, I try to carry turkey or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on wheat bread to eat, and fruit or nuts as snacks.

Q. Do you ever get "homesick?"

A. Actually, I am so blessed to have such a supportive family that believes in me and they are so encouraging, it makes it easier when I am away from home for weeks at a time. If I were married and had family, it would definitely be more difficult to be away. If I were married, I would have my family with me, or I would not stay gone quite as much.

If you have a question for Clay, please email it to qnawithclay@smgoutdoors.com, and we will make sure it is submitted to Clay. Needless to say, he will not be able to answer every question. He will, however, attempt to answer three or four representative questions each month

Clay’s Inspiration for May
As I am out here living my dream doing what I truly love so much, I am constantly seeing things that inspire me and make me feel so grateful. This past tournament was a very tough event, and the wife of one of my pro friends had an accident. She fell out of their travel trailer and broke her arm so severally that she had to have emergency surgery. On top of that, she is expecting their fourth child. To see how she was handling the whole situation is very remarkable. She told her husband not to pull out of the tournament and that she would be just fine. It was amazing to see how positive, gracious and unselfish she was in overcoming this circumstance

Clay’s Challenges for May
Clay will spend most of May on the road with back-to-back tournaments in Arkansas. Clay’s biggest challenge in May will be pacing himself so that he can maintain his
stamina.

C.A.S.T. for Kids
As you know, Clay is the National Spokesperson for C.A.S.T. for kids. The C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation was formed in 1991 to join volunteers who love to fish with disabled and disadvantaged children for a day of fishing in the outdoors. C.A.S.T. for kids furthers its mission by increasing awareness of disabled and disadvantaged children in our communities and teaching appreciation for natural resources.
