Message from Clay
This is one of my favorite times of the year, College and high school football are in full swing and as you might have guessed, I am a huge fan. I also enjoy getting a break from the hectic tournament season. It helps me to have time to fully reflect on the true meaning of Thanksgiving and to appreciate the many blessings and opportunities that I have by virtue of my family, my country, and my God. I also try to make a point of thanking the people in my life who make my life more rewarding and enjoyable. I encourage you to do the same because such a small gesture can have lasting significance and meaning.
Remember, if I can you can.
SPECIAL NOTE: Clay will be making a special appearance on BassFan radio discussing this past year and previewing the year to come. This interview will be available on the BassFan website. October’s Recap
Clay began October by speaking at the Alabama Rehabilitation Commission’s annual banquet in Huntsville, Alabama. He then traveled to Birmingham, Alabama, where he spoke at the Yearly Men’s Meeting at the New Life Church. While in Birmingham, Clay was a guest on the nationally syndicated "Rick and Bubba" radio show, which was followed by an appearance on the Jay Barker Show, and then an appearance on the Ronnie Bruce Christian Talk Show. On October 26th, Clay traveled to Lexington, South Carolina, where he spoke at the Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church’s annual wild game dinner held at a hunting lodge near Columbia.
November’s Outlook
The holidays are approaching and Clay is looking forward to some time with his family and fun fishing. He will start November at the FLW Stren Series Championship in Decatur, Alabama. November 15th – 19th Clay will be in Portland, Oregon, for a speech on behalf of his sponsor BassFan. He will then speak at the Murray Hills Christian Church near Portland, Oregon. This trip will be the Northwest’s introduction to Clay Dyer. Following this Clay will head home to enjoy Thanksgiving and to begin getting acquainted with his new Ranger boat.
Question and Answer with Clay
Q. Of the lakes you fish on, what is your favorite?
A. Locally, my favorite lake is probably Guntersville. All the lakes in the Alabama area are great lakes. Be safe and catch a big one!
Q. What is your favorite lure to use at this time of year on the Elk River?
A. Taking all of the crazy conditions into consideration, if I were fishing on Elk River this time of year, I would start looking around the Bluffs or the smaller pockets adjacent to the bluffs and look for forage minnows. I would use either topwaters, shallow to medium crankbaits with tight wobbling bodies, square lips in shad and chartreuse colors. Also, if you have wind blowing, try some white willow bladed spinnerbaits.
Q. What are your favorite lures for fall fishing?
A. I love fishing in the fall because there are so many lures and techniques that can be effective in catching bass this time of year. Some of my favorites are the Strike King Lures Quad-Shad spinnerbait, flat-sided shallow diving balsa crankbaits, topwater Spit-N-King, and the Diamond Shap lipless vibrating crankbait. Usually these lures will be effective under almost any condition. Be safe on the water.
Q. What support factors help your professional tournament angling?
A. Without a doubt, one reason I am able to compete full time is because I am very blessed to have an incredible family who supports me with unending love and care. Being a professional tournament angler can require being on the road in excess of 175 days a year. I am fortunate that my family stands behind me, and they are able to go with me from time to time. When I’m gone for weeks at a time and am away from my family and the weather is very foul, there are days when it is very demanding on me both physically and mentally. My family is a positive influence and so encouraging about my career, it enables me to do what I do.
If you have a question for Clay, please email it to qnawithclay@smgoutdoors.com and we will make sure it gets submitted to Clay. Needless to say, he will not be able to answer every question. He will, however, attempt to answer three or four representative questions each month.
Everyone who submits a question will be entered into a drawing to be held on December 31, 2006, for which the grand prize will be a day of fishing with Clay. The winner will be announced in the January 2007 Team Dyer Newsletter.
Clay’s Inspiration for November
During my tournament off-season this summer and fall, I have had a great opportunity to be around some incredible people. A couple weeks ago during the pre-game festivities at my high school Alma Maters "senior night" football game, I had the blessing of watching one of our team member’s father who is battling cancer in his hip and back gather enough strength to walk onto the football field to stand proudly by his son in support of his son’s last senior night home game. Seeing how much it meant to the father and son to stand together on the playing field made me think of how blessed I am to be able to live my dream of being a professional bass tournament angler and competing on the FLW Tour and FLW Series. I am inspired by this family’s commitment to and support of each other. I have also been blessed to have their support of my fishing career since my early days as a professional.
Clay’s Challenges for November
Please continue to pray for Clay’s safe travels and that he would continue to be a positive inspiration and role model for all with whom he comes into contact.
